  • high participant adherence achieved through flexibility and ease of use of the platform

Introduction:

Peanut allergies are among the most challenging food allergies faced by children globally, creating significant health risks and impacting daily life. To address this, The Royal Children’s Hospital conducted a paediatric clinical trial to test Probiotic Peanut Oral Immunotherapy (PPOIT) as a potential treatment. A key challenge was finding an effective way to guide families through the treatment process while enabling parents to easily log symptoms and monitor progress. The Royal Children’s Hospital partnered with WeGuide to deliver a customised solution to meet these needs while ensuring participant engagement and precise data collection throughout the trial. This approach improved data accuracy and transformed peanut allergy management, demonstrating the importance of user-centered solutions in successful clinical trials and treatment development.

The challenge:

Peanut allergies can lead to severe reactions, requiring parents to carefully monitor their children's exposure and symptoms. This study focused on children receiving microdoses of peanuts under close observation. Traditional allergy management methods often lack the flexibility and real-time data collection needed for effective treatment. To better understand peanut allergies, the study aimed to gather valuable data from thousands of participants. However, ensuring parent engagement for accurate symptom tracking proved to be a significant challenge.

The goal was to create an efficient process that encouraged high adherence, allowing parents to easily record doses and any adverse reactions. This challenge highlighted the need for a more interactive approach, empowering families while ensuring accurate tracking of daily symptoms and dosages.

The solution:

The Royal Children’s Hospital partnered with WeGuide to deploy a simplified, user-friendly platform aimed at enhancing patient engagement and supporting remote patient monitoring. WeGuide’s user-friendly design ensured that even parents with minimal technical experience could navigate the platform, enabling them to consistently record daily doses and symptoms throughout the randomised controlled trial (RCT). This streamlined approach improved communication between families and healthcare providers, while providing researchers with accurate, real-time insights needed to evaluate PPOIT as a treatment. By making the process simple and engaging, WeGuide’s platform facilitated the success of the paediatric clinical trial and supported the development of better strategies for managing peanut allergies.

The outcomes:

The paediatric clinical trial utilising WeGuide's platform successfully generated evidence that could help validate a potential cure for peanut allergies. The emphasis on effective patient monitoring and symptom tracking not only enhanced the quality of data collected but also enhanced the potential of PPOIT in treating peanut allergies while providing a positive experience for participating families.

Conclusion:

The peanut allergy tracking study, supported by WeGuide's innovative digital platform, shows how patient-centered monitoring can transform clinical trials. By integrating digital symptom tracking with a user-friendly design, WeGuide improved data collection and enhanced the experience for families managing peanut allergies. The successful paediatric clinical trial provided valuable evidence to support a potential cure for peanut allergies. The platform’s flexibility and ease of use encouraged strong participant engagement and adherence, resulting in reliable data collection and a positive experience for families involved.
